Face It: Funny Sells

Think about the most memorable advertisement you’ve ever seen. Chances are it was something humorous. Why? Because funny sells. Funny is human. Funny is, well, funny.

That might be why social media micro-blog sites like @ShitMyDadSays and @TheSulk are raking in the Followers. It also explains why the website is one of the largest (and still growing) and most profitable web sites on the Internet today.

Given that funny is so universally well-liked by everyone it makes sense that some people are putting their best (funniest) foot forward on their social media network to drive in the fans. Whether it is crazy kitten videos or candid camera hijinks, there is almost always a way to find funny material for your social media network.

Maybe you have a funny employee, or funny clients; maybe you have a funny situation or some funny take on a current event. As long as it isn’t something which could offend some sector of your fan base give it a try. It has clearly been working for Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, whose three eldest daughters have been cracking-wise at their Twitter account, @jon2012girls, in support of their dad. It doesn’t hurt their reputation that they intersperse the humor with intriguing tidbits of FACTUAL information about his rivals. This mix of humor and FACT can help his cause. In Huntsman’s case it might be too little, too late, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.

It should also be a valuable lesson to anyone looking at how best to make use of their social media network. Don’t be afraid to have a little fun with it. After all, funny sells.

“We’re trying to get out there,” Mary Anne Huntsman said. “We’re obviously being honest in our tweets. But we want to be light-hearted and funny, but also, you know, help our dad out.”

The sisters are becoming known for their honesty, with candid tweets like, “How does Romney know anything about China? He’s only been there once and that was for the Olympics. Panda express doesn’t count.

They acknowledge that they’re comedic, sassy style is generating buzz online.

Abby Huntsman Livingston said, “We’re the only ones out there, especially our age, that has the opportunity to see the inside of what’s going on in the election. I think a lot of people are curious to see what’s going on. And we’re very honest in everything we say. And I think people are really attracted to that. So we’re having a great time.”

Liddy Huntsman added, “(Readers) may find it weird that a politician’s child — we’re so honest and blunt. We’re supposed to be taken aback and reserved. But we’re having fun with it and like people to see what we’re saying behind the scenes.”
