Pinterest now boasts more than 20 million users and that number continues to grow. What is most significant is not the number of users the site has but how long those users spend at the site. Pinterest is now the third most used site, after Facebook and Tumblr. Given that it has only been around for a scant nine months or so, that is astounding.

There is one drawback (for some) to using Pinterest, however, and it is the fact that women far outnumber men among its users. Some estimates put the usage rate for women at 80% or higher. If you are using Pinterest for social media marketing purposes and want to target women-good news! If you are using Pinterest to target men, well, not so good news.

There are a number of new sites which are trying to create a network similar to Pinterest but geared toward men. They have decidedly manly names , like Dudepins, Manteresting, PunchPin, Gentlemint and Dartitup, and they specialize in the posting of pictures of barbecues, man-caves and, of course, girls. So far these sites are all niche markets and none boasts the sheer volume of users and usage that can be found on Pinterest, but they are getting there.

There is something else remarkable about these sites which should not be overlooked: they exist. It is said that nature abhors a vacuum, and this no less true in the tech world where with a few lines of code anything can be replicated in a slightly altered state so as to create something seemingly new and different. Of course, like most things on the Internet, it’s really just something old in brand new packaging.

There is no reason why someone couldn’t create a man-themed board on Pinterest and promote it to men. Men do use Pinterest, but if there isn’t the sort of content they might be looking for they probably won’t hang around for long. It’s the old saying, ‘if you build it they will come.’ Of course, if you don’t build it there and choose a niche site instead you will lose the ability to capitalize on the volume of users currently visiting Pinterest every month, who might be willing to suggest a board to their spouse (friend, brother, father, son, significant other) and have to start from scratch.

Brandon Harris, co-founder of Dartitup, said that when he first played around with his fiancee’s Pinterest account, he appreciated the concept.

“I loved what it did and I loved the features, but I didn’t like the content,” he said. “The content is not geared towards a guy. I am not interested in cupcakes or puppies. But I am interested in cars and gadgets.”

Not that there aren’t any men pinning. But Ricardo Poupada, co-founder of AskMen, said that when his online men’s magazine started using Pinterest, they noticed that there wasn’t a strong male presence. “There’s still that perception that it is a female-centric site,” he said.

We are women, hear us roar!

The meteoric rise of Pinterest as one of the top three most visited sites on the web is credited in no small part to its adoption, use and sharing by women. Regardless of age (although some specific female demographics seem to be more likely to use it than others) women have flocked to the visually inspired site.

The numbers don’t lie, and in the case, the numbers tell a very interesting story about women and the (social media) influence they wield.

I think I can...

Ok, so I’m just testing the waters with this one…

But hopped over to Storify and I must say it was easy and fun – two of my favorite things!

Of course I didn’t set the world on fire – but I also did this in less than 10 minutes if you count the time it took me to set up and figure out how to do.

Now I’m testing to see how it looks at my blog and publishing it on my blog so you can see it and so I can get feedback on if you think “it’s worth it”.

Is this double the work to post a storify gig at your blog from something you did at Pinterest?

Or is it integrated marketing and connecting the dots.
