The 5 Second Test To Discover If You’re Addicted to Overdrive

by Lori Taylor · 0 comments

Addicted to OverdriveYou know one of the biggest problems addicts face?

Denial.

Addicts are highly talented at hiding their issues, even from themselves.

The curtain of “everything’s okay here” stays firmly closed, covering over the broken window of their soul.

Addicts refuse to believe they’ve got a problem until their problem starts to destroy them. Most addicts have to hit rock bottom before they’ll admit there’s anything wrong.

So what about people who are Addicted to Overdrive?

Like all addictions, overdrive addiction doesn’t only damage you. It also damages the people you love the most. Overdrive means you fail to take care of yourself and your loved ones because your goals and your work have overtaken your life. Do any of the following sound like you?

  • When you wake up, you check your email in bed before you kiss your partner good morning.
  • You stay late at the office, and by the time you get home, your kids are in bed.
  • You bury your dreams beneath “I’ve got too much to do”.
  • You rarely spend time in nature.
  • You go to the gym (or do any other hobby) because you feel you should, rather than because you enjoy it.

We all let things slip from time to time, so don’t feel bad if one or more of the above describes you. However, if there’s an ongoing pattern of you engaging in these behaviours, year after year after year, chances are you’ve got a problem, and you need to take a long hard look at yourself.

But maybe you’re still in denial.

There’s one very simple test to discover if you’re Addicted to Overdrive. Of course, the test can’t annihilate your denial. It can only prod at it, pull you closer to the truth.

It’s a very simple test, and it only takes a few seconds.

Here’s the test.

Within the next week, I want you to find 60 minutes when you sit in silence and do nothing. No talking, no reading, no TV, no smartphone, no computer. Just you and a chair.

Does that sound good?

I can hear your protests already. “Hey! That’s not fair! You lied to me. You said it was a five second test. Not a one hour test.”

Well, sorry sunshine, but life’s not fair. I tricked you.

Or maybe I didn’t. Maybe you don’t even need to take a 60 minute break to discover the truth.

How do you really feel about that 60-minutes? Are you looking forward to it? Good, then put it in your calendar.

On the other hand, maybe you feel terrified. If that’s the case, then chances are, you’re addicted to overdrive.

The more fearful you feel about doing nothing, even for a few minutes, the stronger your addiction to overdrive. The only way you can beat the addiction is to face that fear.

You’ve taken the test, and whatever the results, you have a clear action you can take.

Sixty minute’s silence, sometime in the next week, all alone. No book, no TV, no computer, no smartphone, no kids, no talking. Just you and yourself.

Put it in your calendar now. It will do you the world of good.
