Google Plus makes it super simple to identify influencers in your niche. Once you discover whose views have impact, you’ll know exactly who to target with your influencer strategy. You do want to reach out to influencers, right?
Here is a step-by-step guide to discovering the big players in your niche.
In just a few minutes, you’ll know exactly who to start reaching out to.
Step 1: Identify a Big Name Blog
Begin with a widely read blog in your niche. If you’re not sure where to start, then use the regular Google search engine. Search for “blogs [your niche]”. The top results are the ones to look at.
For this example, we’ve chosen a niche that’s close to our hearts, content marketing. One of the biggest blogs in this niche is Copyblogger.
Step 2: Find Popular Posts from Your Target Blog
Now head over to Google Plus and type the name of your target blog in the search bar. You’ll get a ton of results. If all the results are from people in your circles, then filter the search results by “most recent.”
Step 3: Pick a Juicy Post
Choose a post that’s got a lot of comments or +1’s. That way it’s guaranteed to have a lot of ripples.
Struggling to find a post with comments? Then check out the “People and Pages” search results in the top right. We found the best ripples results by looking at Brian Clark’s page.
Found a post that smells tasty? Then you’re ready for the next step.
Step 4: Make Some Ripples
Hover your mouse over the post you’ve chosen, and click the small arrow that appears at the top right of the post. A drop down menu appears. The last item on the menu should be “View Ripples” (if it’s not there, you need to choose another post). This is when the cool stuff happens. No, you won’t be vaporized. But you will make a splash.
Step 5: Check Out the Influencers
You should have something that looks like this:
Neat, huh? The names that show up in big fonts, or surrounded by big circles, are the influencers. You can hover over their name to see what they said about the specific post you’re investigating. In the menu that comes up when you hover over their names, you can also click through to their profiles or follow them (which adds them to your Google Plus circles).
A Sneaky Tip for Better Results
To improve your chances of success at targeting influencers, choose those who are in the least number of circles. They’re likely to be less inundated with contact requests, and will have more time to talk to you. Start relatively small, and you can work your way up the ladder.
