Blog Traffic

You: Want more traffic to your blog.

Me: Itching to share the best tricks and tips for boosting your traffic.

But first, a little pep talk.

As the year is drawing to a close, we want to keep things easy. It’s been a crazy 12 months. You’ve got enough on your plate with everything else going on.

So, from this list, find one thing you can change on your blog. Make a commitment to do it next year. Choose just one thing you can commit to.

You can do that, can’t you?

Now, into the tips.

1. Write Often

The more you write the better, as long as you don’t sacrifice quality.

Writing more content boosts your traffic in Three ways.

  1. The more you write, the more you’ll keep your dedicated readers and fans coming back to check out your latest posts.
  2. The more you write, the better your chance of being found on search.
  3. The more you write, the more you’ll be talked about on social media.

2. Polish Up Your Site Design

Is your website design less than perfect?

These days, with hundreds of beautiful WordPress templates available for free, or at low-cost, there’s not excuse for an ugly website.

And don’t give me the “having an ugly blog is my way of standing out from the crowd” spiel.

It doesn’t work like that. Ugly design scares away readers. Get your site sorted, today.

Your site should make people feel good just by being there.

3. Share Content With Value

Value comes in all different guises. One person’s discards are another person’s gold. That said, there are three main types of value you can mix into your blog posts.

All three are related to the reasons we go online.

  1. How-to. The main reason people go online is to find out how to do something, or to break through a block. So value in this case is showing your readers how to do stuff they didn’t know how to do before.
  2. Entertainment. Another reason people surf the web is because they’re bored. If you can give them a moment’s relief from their boredom, you’re providing value.
  3. Inspiration. People also go online because they’re looking for a pick-me-up. That’s where you step in with your inspirational message!

The blog posts with the most value share information, are entertaining, and provide inspiration.

4. Define Your Niche

If you want to keep readers coming back again and again, you can’t write about the secret life of ducks one week, and how to make money from adsense the next week.

Mix up your topics, and you’ll never gain a loyal following.

To draw a crowd, stake your claim on a topic. Make it your own. And run with it.

5. Write Content Your Readers Want

What attracts the most traffic to your blog? This is a good indicator of what will attract more traffic in the future.

Look over your blogging stats from the last year. Which blog posts have the most page views? What are these posts about?

These are the topics with the most potential. Plan your editorial calendar for the next year based on your discoveries.

6. Offer Subscribe Options

An easy way to boost traffic is to turn readers into subscribers. Give your readers the option to sign up an an email newsletter. When they’re signed up, email them with your latest posts.

7. SEO

It doesn’t take much to optimize everything you write for Google. If you’re not optimizing already, get started today. We’ve written an easy introduction to SEO to make it super simple for you to get started.

8. Write Great Headlines

We live in hectic times. Everyone has too much to do. One of our most valuable assets is attention. To win attention, you must show you’re worthy of attention. That’s why writing great headlines is so important.

We’ve written up what you need to know to write great headlines, so you need never publish a weak headline again.

9. Write Great Hooks

Got your headlines sorted? Then it’s time to focus on your hooks. The hook is the first sentence or paragraph of a blog post. Once you’ve hooked your readers with your opening sentence, you can reel them in with the rest of your post.

Like headline writing, writing great hooks is an art, but it is an art you can learn.

10. Write List Posts

Readers love list posts because they’re easy to scan. Writers love list posts because there’s a structure they can follow. Plus, list posts make great headlines.

What’s not to love?

11. Write for One Person

When you sit down to write your posts, have one person in mind that you’re writing to. Ideally, this person is someone who you know would enjoy your blog.

You’ll find it easier to write. And you’ll write in a relaxed, conversational tone, which means your readers will benefit too.

12. Keep Readers Engaged With Images

Eye candy isn’t just there to look nice. It’s a way of drawing your reader on through an article. How many images you use is up to you, but you should put at least one image in every article.

13. Write Your About Page

When a new reader discovers your blog, they’ll want to know more about you. This could make the difference between winning them as a subscriber, or sending them away to never return.

Write an About Page that lets them know who you are, your story, and how your blog will help them.

14. Add Social Sharing Buttons

Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and StumbleUpon. You need them all on your blog. The easier you make it for your readers to share, the more they will share.

15. Mix Up Your Content

Do you only post run-of-the-mill blog posts? Then it’s time to start shaking things up!

Try branching out with a video, infographic, or podcast episode, and see how your audience laps it up.

Plus, with every new type of content you create, you’ll add a new way for people to discover you. Videos get found on YouTube, podcasts on iTunes, and Infographics on Pinterest

16. Grow Your Social Media Following

18. Make Friends With Other Bloggers

Get them to share your blog posts in exchange for you sharing theirs. You can do this over at triberr.

Other ways to connect with bloggers include commenting on their blogs, and sharing link love in a round-up blog post.

19. Give Away Stuff!

Freebies always draw a crowd, and the better the stuff you give away, the bigger the crowd that gathers.

Always ask for an email address in exchange for the stuff you give away. That way, you win a long-term subscriber, not just a one-off visitor.

20. Be Sneaky on Twitter to Get the Attention of Influencers

When influencers notice you and share your stuff with their followers, you’ll find it much easier to get traffic. Here’s our sneaky guide for getting noticed on Twitter. You can use similar tactics on Facebook, too.

21. Wait

Doing all of the above already? Then it’s a game of patience. Don’t be tempted to take your foot off the gas. Keep going, and your big break will come.
